Sir William Cole b 1736

In James Edwin-Cole's book in Source 5, on p56, he gives the following description of Sir William COLE b 1736:

WILLIAM WILLOUGHBY COLE,

[first Earl of Enniskillen], second Baron Mount-Florence, was born in 1736, and 6 May 1756, set out from Ireland for Gottingen in the Electorate of Hanover ; he arrived there in June, and 10 August following pursued his travels, visiting the courts of Berlin, Brunswick, Dresden, Munich, Venice, Rome, Naples, Florence, Sicily, Pisa, Leghorn, Genoa, Turin, and most of the towns in Flanders, till 11 September 1757, when he arrived in London. In 1761 he was chosen to parliament for Enniskillen, for which borough he served till 1767; and 7 March, 1768, had his introduction to the house of peers on the death of his father. On 20 July 1776 he was created Viscount Enniskillen, pursuant to privy seal dated at St. James' 24 June preceding, and by that title took his seat in parliament 14 October, 1777 : in 1789, he was further advanced to the dignity of [Ed. added first] first Earl of Enniskillen; and died 22 May, 1803. His wife (to whom he was wedded 3 November, 1763) was Anne, daughter of Galbraith Lowry-Corry, esq., of Ahenis, in the county of Tyrone (whose son Armar was created Earl of Belmore) and by her ladyship, who died in 1802, had issue, ....

Segar's Pedigree Roll of Sir William Cole of Firmanaugh

Source 4 contains pictures of the pages of Segar`s book in pdf format. The original copy is stored at the Family Search web site under the name Genealogie or pedigree of the Right Worshipfull and worthie Captaine Sir William Cole of the Castell of Eneskillen in the Countie of Firmanaugh in the Kingdome of Ireland Knight. In the book, the authors identify themselves as Sire WIlliam Segar, Garter, and William Penson, Lancaster. The original roll was written in 30 July 1630. Many documents were added to this roll and were privately printed all together in 1870. Segar's original document was prepared in the format of a family tree beginning with:

. . . . Roger COLE of the Countie of Devon (Cart 9 E. 2.) who married an unknown woman. They had a son named John COLE also of the Countye of Devon (Cart. 9 E 3 No 24). This John Cole had free Warren in Tamer Liddeston, Hokesbere, & Whitensleight Com. Devon (Cart 9 E. 3. No 24). . . .

. . . . Sir William Cole of Firmanaugh appears on page 10 of Segar's Pedigree Roll (Source 4 below).

Transcriber of Segar's Pedigree Roll of

Wm. Willoughby, the 1st Visct. Enniskillen, reduced it [Segar's Pedigree Roll of Sir William Cole of Firmanaugh] into a narrative form for the Rev. Mervyn Archball's edition of John Lodge's Irish Peerage (8°London, 1789); and his lordship's system and phraseology are here freely made use of, as they were also, though without acknowledgment, in Playfair's British Family Antiquity (fo. Lond. 1810).
The narrative form was subsequently augmented by other more recent material from gravestone inscriptions and other information and was published by ??? in 1897. Refer to Source 6 for more information

The Genealogy of the Family of Cole...of Devon by James EDWIN-COLE

In 1867, James EDWIN-COLE finished his updating of Segar's Pedigree Roll. His updates included many of the descendants of the persons mentioned in Segar's Pedigree Roll, persons known to him as of 1867. The format used by James EDWIN-COLE was the narrative form used by Sir William Willoughby Cole. The full title of the book published in 1867, by James EDWIN-COLE was "The Genealogy of the Family of Cole of the county of Devon and of those of its branches which settled in Suffolk, Hampshire, Surrey, Lincolnshire and Ireland". The webmaster abbreviates this full title to "Coles Of Devon".
